Story of River: A Journey Through Diverse Aquatic Ecosystems

In 2019, we embarked on a remarkable journey to create a public aquarium. Our goal was to design an exhibit that showcases the beauty of aquatic life and educates visitors on the diverse ecosystems found in rivers and lakes around the world. The theme for this project was “Story of a River,” and we meticulously scaped six aquariums, each measuring 6x2x2 feet, with zero silicon pasting. Here’s a closer look at the captivating displays we created:

Tank One: Hill Stream Habitat

The first tank features a hill stream habitat with tropical plants that thrive in the cooler temperatures of Yellagiri Hills. We designed a stunning waterfall using large boulders, roots, and Neil sand. The tank is home to Rainbow Shiners, a cold-water fish that adds vibrant color and movement to this tranquil setup.

Tank Two: Flooded South Indian River

Our second tank mimics a flooded river biotope representing South India’s native rivers. This setup includes massive boulders and a mix of Orange Chromides and Barilius Ardens. The design reflects the natural beauty and diversity of the region’s aquatic environments.

Tank Three: Amazon River Flooded Forest

In the third tank, we recreate the flooded forests of the Amazon River. Lush ferns and Anubias plants provide a rich, green backdrop for Discus, Corydoras, and Tetras. This vibrant display captures the essence of the Amazon’s lush and diverse ecosystem.

Tank Four: Lake Malawi

The fourth tank takes visitors to Lake Malawi, featuring Mbuna cichlids and a stunning hardscape of Congo rocks. The rocky environment replicates the unique underwater landscape of this African lake, known for its colorful and diverse cichlid population.

Tank Five: Amazon Blackwater

Our fifth tank showcases an Amazon blackwater ecosystem. The dark, tannin-stained waters are filled with intricate root structures, providing a perfect habitat for Angels and Red Eye Tetras. This setup highlights the mysterious and enchanting nature of Amazon backwaters.

Tank Six: Tidal Mudflats

The final tank in our series represents tidal mudflats. With large black lava rocks and Neil sand, this tank is home to unique fiddler crabs. The design mimics the dynamic and ever-changing environment of coastal mudflats, providing a fascinating glimpse into this specialized habitat.

Technical Specifications

To ensure optimal conditions for our aquatic inhabitants, each tank has two SunSun HW-304 filters and a Fluval M-Type 300W heater. LED lights illuminate the tanks, enhancing the natural beauty of each ecosystem while providing necessary light for the plants and animals.
