4ft shallow aquarium at filial aquatics

Mastering the Shallow River Scape

We are diving deep into one of our favorite recent installations: a 48-inch shallow riverscape. Shallow aquariums (often
called “Lagoon” or “Bookshelf” tanks) offer a unique panoramic view and exceptional gas exchange, making them perfect for high-flow river biotopes.

The Concept: South Asian Mountain Stream

This design replicates the fast-moving, oxygen-rich waters of South Asian streams. The Focus is on horizontal movement and a “top-down” aesthetic that highlights the textures of rocks and the swaying of aquatic plants.

Step-by-Step Hardscaping

To create a realistic riverbed, we focused on “The Flow Direction.” Substrate: We used a mix of fine Neil Sand and light river gravel. This provides a natural, bright look that reflects light beautifully. Stone Placement: We used natural, rounded river boulders. Large “anchor” stones were placed first to define the main current path, followed by medium and small pebbles scattered towards the foreground to mimic natural erosion.

Figure: Boulders are tilted to show flow from left to right. Mi Nuong plants are tucked into crevices.

Planting with Mi Nuong

The star of the show is “Mi Nuong”. Known for its flowy, grass-like appearance, it thrives in this setup. We attached them between rock crevices and planted small groups behind the larger boulders. As they grow, they will sway in the
current provided by our SUNSUN filtration system. In the background, we used 8 liters of plant soil, and we chose a few easy-growing aquatic plants in the background. The background includes Cabomba Red, Cabomba green, and green tiger lotus.

In the foreground we used Anubias nan “gold”, a mix of different types of Bucephalandra Sp.
